What is Adiutis?

Adiutis is a proof-of-concept ergonomic mobile device, software and algorithms able to monitor selected emotions (e.g. fear and disgust) and performance correlated with stress levels (e.g. reaction time and correctness of the executed task). The technology was developed for the European Space Agency (ESA) and can be beneficial in multiple fields, ranging from support of the training and monitoring of astronauts, through uniformed services to athletes and the general public. Any high-risk occupation requiring high concentration/focus and excellent performance under stress can benefit from the increased awareness of the psychophysiological and emotional state provided by Adiutis.

Light-weight and portable electronics

Adiutis electronics module allows for a simultaneous recording from four electrodermal activity sensors and two photopletysmographs.

Multiple sensor locations in comfortable attire

Sensors can be placed in various locations on the users body, known through extensive testing to provide best signal quality. The electronic component of Adiutis is stored in a pouch located on the user's back.

Scientific Background

Despite many studies showing our increased understanding of emotions, arousal, relaxation state, and individual’s characteristics that may be inferred from psychophysiological recordings, we are still mostly limited to laboratory studies, rarely going outside the carefully controlled environment. This is caused by the bio-electrical nature of psychophysiological recording but also by the equipment that has so far been impractical to wear in everyday tasks: limiting movement, distracting or causing discomfort.

The prototype Adiutis device created in the present study is able to monitor electrodermal activity (EDA) as well as heart rate variability (HRV). The device is lightweight and ergonomic in everyday use and introduces a high cadence of data recording (100 Hz) and data precision and accuracy (~1%), which is available right now only for stationary measuring devices and non-moving subjects. Such a complete device is not yet present on the market nor is in laboratory use.

Adiutis encompasses a set of electronics in an enclosure which can be comfortably worn, sensors which are attached to the above device and to the user's attire, providing the necessary contact points of sensors with the skin, as well as specifically designed software for data gathering, analysis, reduction, storage and visualisation. For the user it can provide an easy access to their psychophysiological data as well as the ability to provide the data for remote monitoring or healthcare services.
